Did you know resin and wood require special care?
Here are some tips to help maintain their beautiful finish:
Wash
Wipe the cutting board with hot soapy water, rinse it with hot water only and just wipe it dry with a clean dish towel. Store the cutting board in an upright position and in a dry area.
You never want to soak your wood in water and too much soap can dry the wood out. When too much water gets absorbed by wood it begins to expand and this is what makes a cutting board warp, bend and crack. Yikes!
DO NOT put in the dishwasher or soak in water!
To disinfect and deodorize, I recommend keeping a spray bottle of vinegar handy to disinfect & deodorize your wood cutting board. Acetic acid (white vinegar) is an excellent disinfectant for E. coli, Salmonella and other household bacteria. Spray vinegar on the wood cutting board, let sit for a few minutes and wipe it with a damp clean cloth.
You can also remove stains and deodorize with baking soda. Combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of salt and 3 tablespoons hot water to create a non-toxic cleaning agent. Mix these ingredients together to form a paste and scrub the entire surface of the cutting board.
For an all-natural clean, periodically rubbing some lemon juice and baking soda or salt on the wooden portion of your board can help remove any stains and naturally disinfect and deodorize it.
To clean the resin portion, wipe down with glass cleaner for a streak free finish. Avoid anything abrasive on this portion to reduce the risk of scratches.
Preserve & Protect
Think of wood the same way you’d think of your skin. It needs moisturizer to stay soft and supple. Your wooden board needs oil to stay strong and vibrant. The more we wash our boards, the more we draw out the natural oils which makes it prone to splitting and warping. The best way to know when your board is craving oil is to look at the color of the wood. The duller the wood, the more likely it needs to be re-oiled.
I prefer CLARK’S cutting board oil and wax for its combination of natural oils and delightful scent. First, apply a generous amount of oil evenly to the wood surface and allow it to penetrate for 1-2 hours. Make sure you oil all sides. If conditioning the wood for the first time, apply oil several times over a 24-hour period. Your new board may be thirsty and may absorb a lot of oil. Wipe off any excess oil and move on to the wax.
Bring that shine and luster back to your cutting board using the cutting board wax last. Simply rub the wax on your wood surface, let it sit for 30 minutes and buff off any excess wax. Use the CLARK’S applicator and buffing pad designed specifically to make this task even easier!
DO NOT use vegetable oil or olive oils as these can become rancid and begin to smell!
Cutting
These pieces are mostly meant for displaying and serving. While you can cut on the wood, I do not recommend cutting on the artwork feature of your board. Cutting on the resin will cause your knife to dull and can scratch the artwork. However, you can use a dull knife just fine for cheeses and spreads.
You can also flip over the board and cut on the back side!
Avoid Heat
Try to keep out of direct long exposure to sunlight as yellowing can occur.
Epoxy resin is not suitable for contact with hot food, use with cold food only.
